Gallery walls have a higher failure rate than almost any other interior design decision. Most attempts end up looking either like a storage solution or like a mood board that never resolved itself. Here's how to do it so it looks deliberate.
The Anchor Piece Rule
Every successful gallery wall has one piece that's clearly the anchor — larger than everything else, visually dominant. Without it, the arrangement becomes democratic in a way that reads as indecisive. It should be at least twice the size of any other piece. Position it at eye level, slightly left or right of centre.
Large abstract canvases make excellent anchors. So do strong figure pieces and dramatic surreal compositions.
The Connecting Thread
Gallery walls that look curated have a connecting thread. The most reliable: a shared colour that appears in every piece (even subtly), a consistent frame colour, or consistent subject matter approached differently. A mix of landscape, floral, and animal art works when all three share an earthy palette.
Spacing: The Most Common Mistake
5-8cm between frames — consistent throughout. Too much space and pieces look isolated; too little and it looks cramped. The outer edges of the arrangement should feel deliberately bounded.
The Floor Test
Lay all pieces on the floor in the approximate arrangement you're planning. Step back. This is much closer to the wall result than any digital mock-up. Make adjustments here, not after you've made the first hole.
When to Stop
Five to seven pieces for a standard wall; three to four for a smaller space. Negative space between pieces is as important as the pieces themselves. The instinct to fill every gap should be resisted.
