Let the Crop Set the Distance

A close face feels immediate because the eyes and features occupy most of the print. It can hold a living-room focal wall, a dressing area or the space above a desk without needing other art around it. Profiles, covered eyes and figures seen from behind create more distance. They often suit bedrooms, hallways and reading corners where you want human presence without constant eye contact.

Full figures, dancers and fashion poses use the surrounding space as part of the composition. Keep that negative space visible when framing. A wide mat can make a delicate line drawing feel intentional, while a tight frame can strengthen a graphic face or high-contrast silhouette.
